Young Marketeers assembly

Year 4 were excited to welcome a representative from School Food Matters, who launched our Young Marketeers project in the classroom. This inspiring initiative gives children the opportunity to learn about where food comes from and how it reaches our plates.

Each year, we visit Borough Market, where pupils explore key ideas such as growing vegetables, sustainability, and marketing. As part of the project, the children receive seeds and grow their own vegetables, which they later sell at the market—developing both practical skills and an understanding of enterprise.

During today’s session, the children focused on food waste. They learned about its negative impact on the planet, as well as simple ways to reduce waste and make more mindful choices about what we buy and eat. The session also highlighted the benefits of local produce, helping children understand why food grown nearby is often fresher, healthier, and more environmentally friendly.

The children were particularly interested in how growing fruits and vegetables without artificial fertilisers or pesticides can lead to healthier food and a more sustainable future.
