St Mary's Modern Foreign Languages Policy

At St Mary’s CE School, learning a Modern Foreign Language helps pupils develop curiosity, confidence and respect for the wider world. Rooted in our values of love, respect, peace, forgiveness, responsibility and faith, our Languages curriculum encourages pupils to appreciate cultural diversity and communicate with growing confidence. We follow a curriculum supported by Language Angels resources, developed according to guidance given in the National Curriculum. You can learn more about our Curriculum below:

Intent

At St Mary’s CE School, our intent in Modern Foreign Languages is to inspire curiosity and enjoyment in learning another language, while helping children to develop confidence as communicators and respect for different cultures. Our Languages curriculum supports pupils to become open-minded, respectful and prepared for life in a diverse world. We aim for all pupils to:

  • Enjoy learning a Modern Foreign Language
  • Develop confidence in speaking, listening, reading and writing
  • Gain an understanding of different cultures and traditions
  • Build strong foundations for further language learning

Implementation

We follow a Modern Foreign Languages curriculum supported by Language Angels, developed in line with the National Curriculum. This provides a consistent and progressive approach to language learning, ensuring consistency and clear progression of skills. Teaching focuses on:

  • Listening and responding to spoken language
  • Developing accurate pronunciation and intonation
  • Speaking with increasing confidence and fluency
  • Reading and understanding short texts
  • Writing simple words, phrases and sentences

Lessons are engaging and interactive, using songs, games, repetition and visual prompts to support memory and enjoyment. Cultural learning is included in lessons to develop pupils’ understanding of the wider world.

Impact

As a result of our Modern Foreign Languages curriculum, pupils:

  • Develop confidence and enthusiasm for learning another language
  • Communicate using simple spoken and written language
  • Show curiosity and respect for other cultures and traditions
  • Build strong foundations for language learning in Key Stage 3
  • Demonstrate positive attitudes towards diversity and difference
