Personal, Social and Health Education

St Mary's PSHE Policy           St Mary's Relationships and Sex Education Policy

At St Mary’s CE School, PSHE plays a vital role in supporting pupils’ personal development, wellbeing and relationships. Rooted in our Christian values of respect, peace, forgiveness, responsibility and faith, our PSHE curriculum helps children to understand themselves, relate positively to others and make informed, responsible choices. Pupils follow the Jigsaw PSHE programme in Key Stage 1 and 2.

Intent

Our intent in PSHE is to equip pupils with the knowledge, skills and attitudes they need to lead healthy, safe and fulfilling lives. We aim to ensure children:

  • Develop confidence, self-awareness and resilience
  • Learn how to build positive, respectful relationships
  • Understand how to keep themselves physically and mentally healthy
  • Develop a strong sense of responsibility and empathy for others
  • Are prepared for the opportunities and challenges of modern life

PSHE supports pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and underpins learning across the wider curriculum.

Implementation

PSHE is taught using the Jigsaw programme, which provides a progressive, whole-school approach to personal development. Jigsaw is aligned with National Curriculum guidance and supports learning through a spiral curriculum. The programme is organised into six key themes:

  • Being Me in My World
  • Celebrating Difference
  • Dreams and Goals
  • Healthy Me
  • Relationships
  • Changing Me

Lessons include opportunities for discussion, reflection and practical activities, helping pupils to develop emotional literacy and self-regulation. A strong emphasis is placed on creating a safe, respectful learning environment where pupils feel confident to share and learn.

Impact

As a result of our PSHE curriculum, pupils:

  • Develop confidence and self-esteem
  • Show respect, empathy and understanding towards others
  • Make informed and responsible choices
  • Understand how to keep themselves healthy and safe
  • Demonstrate positive attitudes to learning and relationships

Pupils leave St Mary’s CE School well prepared to contribute positively to school life and the wider community.

Roots of Empathy

Year 3 are thrilled to embark on the ‘Roots of Empathy’ journey. It’s a programme that supports children to reflect on their feelings and develop empathy for others by coaching pupils to connect with a baby.

We have been working with lovely baby Pricillia and her mum. They are visiting us once every three weeks for the next few months and we cannot wait to watch him grow and learn from him. We were also delighted to be visited by the founder, president and CEO of Roots of Empathy, Mary Gordon.

Year 3 Girls Believe!

Congratulations to all of the girls in Year 3 who successfully completed the 8 week BEAM programme, focusing on building confidence, friendships and transitions.
