Physical Education

At St Mary’s CE School, Physical Education (PE) plays an important role in supporting pupils’ physical health, wellbeing and personal development. Guided by our Christian values of love, respect, peace, forgiveness, responsibility and faith, our PE curriculum encourages pupils to be active, confident and promotes teamwork, fairness and enjoyment of physical activity. A Junior Adventures Group Coach delivers PE lessons.

See below for more details about our PE Curriculum:

Intent

Our intent in Physical Education is to inspire all pupils to develop a lifelong love of physical activity and sport. We aim to ensure that every child:

  • Develops physical competence, confidence and coordination
  • Understands the importance of a healthy, active lifestyle
  • Experiences enjoyment, success and challenge in physical activity
  • Learns to work collaboratively, show sportsmanship and respect others
  • Has opportunities to participate in competitive and non-competitive sport

PE also supports pupils’ emotional wellbeing, resilience and personal development.

Implementation

Physical Education lessons are delivered by a Junior Adventures Group (JAG) sports coach, who has been a well-established and valued part of our teaching team for many years. This provides consistency, high-quality teaching and strong subject expertise. The PE curriculum:

  • Is aligned to the National Curriculum
  • Covers a range of sports, physical skills and activities
  • Develops agility, balance, coordination and fitness
  • Encourages teamwork, cooperation and fair play

Pupils take part in regular inter-school sporting competitions, allowing them to apply skills in competitive contexts, build confidence and represent the school positively. Competitive sport is inclusive and accessible, ensuring all pupils have the opportunity to participate.

Impact

As a result of our Physical Education provision, pupils:

  • Are active, engaged and motivated in PE lessons
  • Develop confidence and competence across a range of physical activities
  • Demonstrate positive attitudes, teamwork and sportsmanship
  • Understand the importance of health, fitness and wellbeing
  • Participate confidently in competitive sport and physical challenges

Pupils leave St Mary’s CE School with the skills, knowledge and positive attitudes needed to lead active and healthy lives.

Sports Tournaments

We enrich the PE curriculum by offering all children the opportunity to take part in tournaments and matches against Schools from across Lewisham. Children in KS2 travel to Haseltine School in Sydenham for weekly football league matches. In addition, we take part in tournaments across the year, held at local Secondary Schools - including Athletics, Basketball, Cricket, Football, Hockey, Inclusive Multiskills and Netball.

Sports Tournaments

Sports Day

Our annuals Sports Day is held at the Alex Yee Ladywell Arena (named after a local Olympic gold medallist!) where every child enjoys a range of sporting challenges!
