Respect
We start by learning to respect ourselves and to be proud of all that we do. This leads us to respect one another, to value diversity and difference and to show respect for our learning, our school community and the world we live in. On this page you will find lots of links to resources and ideas to help you explore and reflect on the value of Respect.
You will also see many examples of this value in action at St Mary's.

Respect News StoriesWalk with Amal
We learned about Respect for immigrants and refugees as we joined Amal the giant walking puppet , who had walked all the way from the Syrian/Turkish border across 8000km and 8 countries and finally arrived in the UK. Year 5 were on Deptford High Street to give her a very warm and special welcome along with lots of other children from Lewisham schools! As Lewisham's first School of Sanctuary St. Mary's had a very special part to play and accompanied Amal with giant bunting down the high street to Giffin Square where a huge poster was hanging which had been created by Years 5 and 6. Ayana then gave Amal a giant Paddington sticker. Remember Paddington Bear was also a refugee like Amal! Chinese New Year
The whole school enjoyed a wonderful week immersing themselves in Chinese culture. Each class took part in a Chinese Dragon Dance workshop, finishing off with a spectacular performance from our KS2 children performing traditional dances. The children enjoyed traditional storytelling, made different crafts based on the animals from the Chinese zodiac as well as feast on a Chinese lunch prepared by our school chefs. There was also a parents breakfast with food provided by our parents. Thank you to the parents who provided all the delicious dishes and also to those who came in to teach our children some Chinese calligraphy. Sparks of Faith
This project supported the children in learning about respect for different Faiths. Year 3 collaborated with Artists and developed their Artistic skills. As part of a 2 day workshop, the children worked as a team to produce 6 collages around the theme of ”Sparks of Faith”. They reflected on different Religions and learned about their practices and beliefs. The children then used magazines, paint and their environment as sources of inspiration for their work. The religious symbols were displayed at a local Art Gallery. |
