Science - This term in Science Year 3 have been exploring states of matter, we have been looking at solids, liquids and gases. We carried out an investigation, looking at different materials and identifying the properties which made them either a solid or liquid.
Destination Reader- This term Year 3 started destination reader. They have really been enjoying destination reader and have already read a range of texts and have learnt to use a range of reading strategies such as clarifying, predicting, asking questions and summarising. We created freeze frames of different parts of the story we were reading. Year 3 had a big problem to solve - organising an order of chocolate pizzas! They worked systematically and used their addition skills in order to find all of the ways to balance the pizzas on the cross-shaped tray.
This month the school celebrated Black History month, this is an annual commemoration of the history, achievement and contributions of Black people in the UK. To kick off our celebrations, Year 3 participated in a drumming workshop, in which they learnt and played different rhythms on traditional drums from Guinea, West Africa.
This half-term in Maths Year 3 have been looking at place value. We have been learning that two digit numbers are made up of ones and tens and can be partitioned. Year 3 then went onto exploring different ways to partition two digit numbers.
We are very excited to have received some wonderful photos of Home Learning. The children have been busy making a handwashing poster, creating beautiful artwork, learning a new language (French), creating some wonderful cooking and completing excellent writing about a dream school trip. Mani has been really creative in making this wonderful rainbow, to brighten up everybody’s day. We would love to see some more photos of Year 3 learning at home, so that we can add them to the Hall Of Fame; please send your pictures to: admin@st-marys.lewisham.sch.uk.
Our Year 3 class have enjoyed some very special learning this year, developing their learning about the values of Responsibility, Love and Empathy. Every week they learn how to care for a young baby and use this to reflect on their own feelings. Once a month, they are lucky to be joined by a baby and his mother, so they get to see the young child developing and learn about his care.
In science, we explored magnetism. We learnt about the North and South Pole in magnets and discovered that when like poles on a magnet are put together they push away (repel) and when unlike poles on a magnet are put together they pull together (attract). We also planned our own experiment to test which materials were magnetic.
his half term, in Maths, we learnt how to problem solve using trial and improvement. We worked in pairs to put back together the pieces of a 100 square that Miss Egunjobi accidently muddled up. However, the 100 square did not have numbers on it. It had symbols! Therefore, we had to use our knowledge of patterns to solve the puzzle. It took lots of collaboration!
In RE, we have been learning about the Bible. We learnt that the Bible is a Holy book for Christians, which is filled with lots of different books. We also learnt what the “Big Story” of the Bible is and created our own class actions to remember each important part in it.
Year 3 have been learning about forces in Science. We learnt that there would be lots of friction between the rocks and the ground when they were being dragged so we investigated which material would have made dragging these rocks easier. We used Newton Meters to measure the amount of force it takes to move big rocks across a range of different materials. We found out that smooth plastic caused the least resistance.
