We are delighted that the children of St Mary's were once again able to enjoy a day of African drumming workshops. The children were learning from an experienced and talented performer from Senegal and every class made great progress. They also learned about West African culture and the importance of Drumming throughout the History of the region. A performance for the whole school was the perfect way to end the day.
As part of our thematic curriculum, Year 6 studied the work of Adenike Okundaye Davis, a famous Nigerian textile artist. Inspired by her designs, the children learned new sculpture techniques in order to design and create African clay masks. The standard was so high, they were invited to exhibit their work in a local exhibition, held at St Mary's Church. The children were thrilled to see their work displayed.
Congratulations to our Year 5 and Year 6 football stars, who took part in a tournament held at a local Primary school, playing matches against three other schools. All of the players performed really well and played with enthusiasm and respect.
Every class enjoyed a special day focusing on Maths Investigations and Problem Solving - a great way to deepen the children's mathematical understanding and for them to apply their reasoning and arithmetic skills. This half term we focused on 'Trial and Improvement' - having a go and learning from every attempt!
St Mary's Church and Therapeutic Garden were the perfect setting for a day of Prayer, Reflection and Peace. Many thanks to Father Max, Father Steve, Reader Marion and our School Governor Kate Riches, for supporting the event to ensure that everything ran smoothly. Each child in the school enjoyed 4 activities, planned and led by the Children's Faith Group. The 4 activities, which linked to our school values were:
Year 1, 2 and 3 travelled with some special friends to the therapeutic garden in St Mary's Church. They took their favourite Teddy Bears for a wonderful Reading Picnic. As the children munched on jam sandwiches, their teachers shared some of their favourite stories with them. Huge thanks to all of the parents who joined us and enjoyed sharing their favourite books with small groups of children. We know our children love stories, so please keep reading at home!
Health week culminated in our annual Sports Day, a fantastic event held at Ladywell Arena athletics track. The children competed in their teams at Sports Day, completing seven athletic challenges and a sprint race. It was also wonderful to be able to welcome our parents back to cheer their children on and take part in a tug of war and parent’s races. Congratulations to our winning teams, in KS1 the champions were the RED team with 220 points and in KS2 the BLUE team won with a record score of 646!
Each class at St Mary’s enjoyed taking part in a wide range of activities - focused on the theme of ‘healthy mind, healthy body’. During the week, the children experienced meditation, yoga, vegetable tasting, daily exercise and some healthy maths!
Science is always a favourite at St. Mary's and following our amazing Science Day we are delighted to be sending home special Science activity packs for all of our girls in Years 3, 4 , 5 and 6.
These packs contain lots of resources, activities and information about women involved in science. Girls are traditionally under represented in the science fields of work and study at university or college so it is important that we encourage the love of Science at an early age! The packs have been provided by the University of Southampton to whom we are very grateful and we hope the girls enjoy them! St Mary’s introduced a new initiative this year, as we invited a range of professionals, including some of our amazing parents, into the school to talk to the children about a wide range of interesting careers. Our visitors included doctors, an architect, a structural engineer, an artist and coder, a film producer, a gardener and taekwondo world champion and an author and Olympic sportswoman. The aim was to broaden the children’s horizons, to inspire them about the opportunities that await them and to learn about the journeys that our visitors had been on to meet their career goals. Ultimately, we want our children to know that with faith, perseverance and hard work, there is nothing that they can’t achieve.
