We had an amazing day being Anglo Saxons and Vikings. We went into battle and made a shield wall where we roared at each other across the room. We played a game where we raced across the sea to raid England and learnt all about how we got the names of the days of the week from the old Anglo Saxon and Viking gods.
It was awesome to handle real (but blunt) weapons that would have been used including swords, axes and spears. After break, we became archaeologists and investigated some strange objects and guessed what we thought they were made of and used for. We even got to see how the Vikings would have made fire by creating a spark from flint and steel. In the afternoon, we learnt how Viking’s used many strategies to navigate the seas and learnt how to row in a Longship. We also played a game where we had to sneak up on the monks (who were actually Miss Baxter and Miss Brown) in Lindisfarne and execute them. It was really funny but luckily they came back to life. We had fun learning about what the Anglo Saxons and Viking ate and how they would have performed a burial when someone important died. They would actually burn them on boats at sea and servants would be sacrificed to travel with their masters to Valhalla (their version of heaven). A brilliant day we will always remember!
