For Black History Month, we took part in a Steel Pan workshop. The Steel Pan Agency told us how steel pans are made, their history and how to look after them. We also played a tune together as a class.
Year 3 have been learning how to write a warning tale. We learnt the story of Little Red Riding Hood, participated in lots of drama and then created our own warning tales.
Year 3 and 4 went to St Mary’s Church to find out how the Christian message has survived for over 2000 years
We learnt about the history of Jesus by looking at the stained glass windows. Father Steffan what the Pentecost was and told us that it happened after Jesus’ ascension. We thought about what qualities the apostles needed in order to go out and spread God’s word and reflected on the Fruit of the Spirit. Father Steffan then gave us some of the history of the church and showed us how the message is still spread today, using bible readings and sermons (teaching) and pictures. We also learnt that when a bishop confirms someone, Christians believe that the Bishop passes the Holy Spirit on and then tells them to, ‘Go in peace to love and serve the Lord.’ Today, Year 3 and 4 visited the Jewish Synagogue to deepen our understanding of the roots of Judaism and to find out more about how Jewish people worship. It was fascinating to hear about some of the similarities and differences between the Christian and Jewish Faith.
We learnt that men and women sit in different places during worship and that it is only the men that have to pray three times a day. We were shown the Torah and found out about how it is beautifully handwritten in Hebrew. We then shared some reflections of how the Jewish people were persecuted during the Holocaust and shared some refreshments together. It was great to put all of our previous learning about Judaism into perspective and link our current learning about persecution in Christianity to the more recent victims of religious persecution. Today Year 3 learnt all about nutrition. They learnt about healthy food choices, created their own canapes and rode a bike which powered a smoothie which has been made out of both vegetables and fruits.
This week, we have been collaborating with Artists and developed their Artistic skills. As part of 2 day worship, the children worked as a team to produce 6 collages around the theme of ”Sparks”. They used magazines, paint and their environment as sources of inspiration for their work.
Year 3 and 4 went o a trip to the Hindu Temple in Lewisham. They learned about Hindu religious concepts, traditions and culture.
We had an amazing day being Anglo Saxons and Vikings. We went into battle and made a shield wall where we roared at each other across the room. We played a game where we raced across the sea to raid England and learnt all about how we got the names of the days of the week from the old Anglo Saxon and Viking gods.
It was awesome to handle real (but blunt) weapons that would have been used including swords, axes and spears. After break, we became archaeologists and investigated some strange objects and guessed what we thought they were made of and used for. We even got to see how the Vikings would have made fire by creating a spark from flint and steel. In the afternoon, we learnt how Viking’s used many strategies to navigate the seas and learnt how to row in a Longship. We also played a game where we had to sneak up on the monks (who were actually Miss Baxter and Miss Brown) in Lindisfarne and execute them. It was really funny but luckily they came back to life. We had fun learning about what the Anglo Saxons and Viking ate and how they would have performed a burial when someone important died. They would actually burn them on boats at sea and servants would be sacrificed to travel with their masters to Valhalla (their version of heaven). A brilliant day we will always remember! |
