Thank to all of the parents and children who joined us for a fantastic celebration. There were many outdoor games to enjoy including hook a duck, tombola, raffle, ring toss, balloon pop, coconut shy, football and tin can alley! Food and drink were enjoyed and there was live music alongside performances from our school choir and African drumming group.
KS1 and KS2 visited Greenwich Theatre for a Christmas treat, enjoying a lively and exciting performance of ‘The Queen of Hearts’. We didn’t forget our children in Nursery and Reception, they stayed at school for a wonderful production of ‘Sleeping Beauty’.
Our School Choir represented St Mary’s with pride and a high quality performance at Blackheath Concert Halls. As well as performing 2 solo songs ‘Away in a manger’ and ‘The angel Gabriel’ they also performed in several group songs alongside other Lewisham schools. Thanks to our School Governor, Chris Stringfellow, for supporting our School Choir.
We are very proud to have received this award, which recognises how our School Vision and Values support the wellbeing and education of everyone in our School Community. We hope you enjoy reading the report:
Congratulations to all of our children who practised hard, learnt their times table facts and took part in their class heats. 2 finalists from each class battled it out in front of the whole school to find our 2021 champions!
Lewisham Youth Theatre came to our school for a workshop with a selection of children from Year 5 and 6. The focus was on well-being and as you can see it took place in our therapeutic garden! The pupils had to organise some thoughts and feelings in order before doing some role play.
We definitely have a few budding actors and actresses! More opportunities with Lewisham Youth Theatre in the New Year so watch this space…. Amal the giant walking puppet walked all the way from the Syrian/Turkish border across 8000km and 8 countries and finally arrived in the UK. Year 5 were on Deptford High Street to give her a very warm and special welcome along with lots of other children from Lewisham schools! As Lewisham's first School of Sanctuary St. Mary's had a very special part to play and accompanied Amal with giant bunting down the high street to Giffin Square where a huge poster was hanging which had been created by Years 5 and 6. Ayana then gave Amal a giant Paddington sticker. Remember Paddington Bear was also a refugee like Amal!
Year 5 also spoke with the Mayor of Lewisham Damian Egan and Councillor Kevin Bonavia who has visited our school before. We even featured on BBC news that night! Year 5 were a real credit to the school and lots of people complimented them on their brilliant behaviour and good manners during what was a very busy celebration. It was an amazing day and we are grateful to our governors and parents who accompanied us on the trip! The children enjoyed a very special lunch as they designed their own delicious burgers and ice-cream sundaes.
Our Year 5 and Year 6 children played in an exciting tournament held in Sydenham, competing against teams from other Lewisham Schools. After some close-fought group matches, both teams qualified for the finals! The girls team picked up Silver medals as the runners-up, whilst the boys went one better and picked up Gold medals and a trophy as the 2021 Champions!
Reasoning and Problem Solving lie at the heart of our Maths curriculum. The children love to solve real problems in a context so that they can put their Maths learning into practice. This term, our focus was 'Trial and Improvement'. After a whole school Worship, each class then enjoyed their own challenges, using physical resources, pictures and symbols to solve Maths Problems.
