Our amazing Girls football team have been representing the school at a series of league matches in Sydenham. Every Monday after school they have been busy showing off their skills on the pitch as they play against local Lewisham schools. Win, lose or draw, the girls always play with enthusiasm, teamwork and respect. We are very proud of them!
Our children enjoyed an after school club in the Spring Term, led by the Iroko Theatre company. Over several weeks, the children learned different elements of storytelling, leading up to a final performance. The combination of music, drama and storytelling created a wonderful atmosphere. In addition, our teachers received training from Iroko.
We have come to the end of another very exciting Book Week!
The children have had a marvellous time diving into lots of non-fiction books during their class reading banquets and teacher swap! On Tuesday, they were inspired by the award-winning author, Colin Stuart, who came in to take the children on a journey to Mars. Year 5 were inspired by the fantastic facts that Colin shared with them and created some rocket-themed stop motion animations. The children have also been analysing information from book surveys using technology to create charts and graphs. They even planned and carried out a ‘Dress Up Day’ Photoshoot. The children got creative with their costumes and came dressed as scientists, astronauts, Egyptians, and many other special people who made history, like Mary Seacole, Usain Bolt and even Abraham Lincoln! They all looked amazing and loved seeing all their teachers dressed up in silly outfits too!
St Mary's hosted a very special event as we welcomed Damien Egan, the Mayor of Lewisham to our school. Damien's visit marked the official launch of the Lewisham Borough of Culture - a year of special cultural events celebrating our diversity. We were blessed to be chosen and the children responded brilliantly with a wonderful performance of the 'Lewisham Bop'. We were filmed by ITV and featured prominently in the evening news. Several of our children were interviewed and spoke articulately and looked amazing on ITV. Below, you can see photos, videos, a link to the news item and a YouTube video featuring St Mary's alongside other Lewisham schools.

St Mary's celebrated the Year of the Tiger with support from our families from our Chinese community. A group of parents kindly prepared a wide range of delicious home-cooked Chinese dishes, which were enjoyed by all of the children (and staff!). The parents also led Chinese craft workshops as the children learned calligraphy, lantern making and paper design.
Many thanks to Mr Scrivens, Miss Dikule and Mr Parchment who created a wonderful Chinese dragon. Every class took part in a Dragon Dance lesson, the children loved to learn a new dance technique! Other events to celebrate Chinese New Year included Maths Problem Solving challenges, traditional story telling and an art and design competition. A fantastic team of children travelled to Sydenham School to represent St Mary's in an exciting sports tournament. All of the children completed several athletic activities, running, jumping, throwing and balancing. St Mary's performed brilliantly and every child was a sports star!
Every class enjoyed a special day at St Mary's as we were joined by visitors from the local Police. The children loved meeting the 2 police horses and they learnt all about these amazing animals and how they support many events including the Olympic games and royal weddings! We also learned about other forms of Police transport - bikes, motorbikes, cars and even an HGV! Later in the day, each class joined our safer schools officers for an informative and reflective discussion on how we can stay safe in our local communities and how the Police can help us.
We were delighted to welcome members of our local school community from Bentley Court and Glebe. Our visitors enjoyed a Nativity performance, carols from our choir and a delicious Christmas lunch!
Year 2 starred in our production of ’Hosanna Rock’ as they retold the Nativity story with wonderful acting, singing and dance performances. Year 1 looked amazing as they joined in with the singing and dancing. Many thanks to the staff team for creating the wonderful costumes and set and thank you to the many parents who were able to join us for such a special event.
St Mary's School have been featured in the latest issue of 'The Bridge', our Southwark Diocesan monthly newspaper. As well as focusing on the school's support for Amal, the refugee puppet, it also features an interview with our Headteacher, Christine Graham. The article highlights many aspects of the school's work as a Sanctuary School and is well worth a read. Follow this link to the November Issue or see below...
